Milestones to Meaningful Marriage

April 19th, 2007 by Stanley Scism

Randy (8 years old) advises men:  “Be a good kisser.  It might make your wife forget that you never take out the trash” (quoted in Reflections, March-April 2002, p15).

“Milestones to Meaningful Marriage” (by Wayne Warmer, Preserving Christian Homes, March-April 2002, p6-7).  The author, married 54 years, lists these milestones thus:

1.Maturity.  Neither of us is perfect, so each of us must achieve emotional balance.
2.Mutuality.  We each contribute equally to the relationship and accept responsibility for it.
3.Self-understanding.  We want to know ourselves physically, emotionally, spiritually, and improve ourselves.
4.Mutual communication.  We talk together enough to discuss problems, find solutions, agree in unity based on what is right, not who is.
5.Relational.  We’re too halves of one whole, so sometimes the relationship takes precedence over individual will.  Marriage over personal.  It’s a team.
6.Serving.  We both work at the relationship to meet each other’s needs.  We’re subject to each other in Jesus Christ.  When Christian husbands love their wives as Christ loved the church, Christian wives have no problem in obeying their husbands as to the Lord.
7.Selfless.  We each think first of the other.  This brings out the best in ourselves.
8.Behavior.  We show respect and esteem for each other as individuals.
9.Mannerly.  Politeness is always high fashion.  Courtesy.
10.Prayerful.  Pray together before going to sleep every night.  Pray about all decisions.
